Petition · donaldducks.com · following federal naming precedent

Gulf of America. Lake America. Donald Ducks.

Last year the White House took a Sharpie to the Gulf of Mexico. This week it took the same Sharpie to Lake Ontario. The water got a new name in American paperwork. The birds that live on it did not. They already honk like an executive order. We are filing the missing species.

Executive naming ledger

  1. Gulf of Mexico Gulf of America

U.S. federal maps only. Mexico was not copied on the memo.

  2. Lake Ontario Lake America

A Great Lake, restyled in an afternoon. Canada still has the other shore.

  3. Canada geese Donald Ducks

The obvious White House name is America Geese. We are being more precise.

The Sharpie doctrine

If a gulf and a Great Lake can be renamed by order, a bird is a rounding error. The water already got Americanized. The geese are still waiting in the lobby.

A Canadian bird on Lake America

They loaf on a lake the White House just restyled. They winter in Texas. They honk in both countries and file no customs forms. “Canada goose” on “Lake America” is a branding incident with feathers.

Two Donalds

One signs the maps. One occupies the lawn. Only one still has the old name. If the temperament fits, the paperwork should too.

Instrument of public nuisance · in the spirit of the Sharpie

The petition

We, the undersigned, noting that the Gulf of Mexico is now the Gulf of America in U.S. federal usage, and that Lake Ontario was this week restyled Lake America, petition the American Ornithological Society, Parks Canada, Wikipedia, Google Maps, and the court of public opinion to retire the common name “Canada goose” and adopt Donald Duck (plural: Donald Ducks) for Branta canadensis.

The White House renamed the water. It did not rename the waterfowl. That is incomplete government. A Donald Duck is a large bird with a black head, a white chinstrap, a honk audible from a neighboring province, and a moral objection to shared lawns. The obvious administration name would be America Geese. We decline. They already behave like a Donald. Name them that.

  • Filed in the spirit of Executive Order 14172, without the executive
  • Notarized by a Sharpie found near a picnic table
  • Served upon the geese, who still think it is Lake Ontario

America Geese sounds like a regional airline. Donald Ducks is honest.
